Creating more efficient tools and processes for resource management at collaborative production sites in the process industry was the central concern of the European cooperation project SHAREBOX. An ICT platform for the flexible management of shared process resources was developed, providing plant and production managers with robust and reliable information about which resources (equipment, energy, water, residues and recycled materials) could be shared effectively and safely with other companies. Thus, SHAREBOX made an important contribution to the development of symbiotic ecosystems (industrial symbiosis) and the sustainable use of existing resources.
