PotenCEA: Opportunities for Circular Economy in the Automotive Industry

Last updated on: 23 Jul, 2025

Project Duration

January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025

Funding

The project is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.

Why PotenCEA?

With the project PotenCEA – Potentials for Circular Economy in the Automotive Industry, the Cluster Automotive, the Umweltcluster Bayern, and the Chemie-Cluster Bayern are working together to find solutions for the circular use of plastics in vehicle manufacturing. The goal is to identify and implement new approaches for the recovery and reuse of plastics along the entire value chain.

Every year, more than six million vehicles in Europe reach the end of their life cycle – resulting in significant amounts of plastic components, which so far have only been partially recovered. Plastics are lightweight, versatile, and indispensable in modern vehicle manufacturing – but at the same time, they pose a particular challenge for recycling.

PotenCEA brings together companies from the automotive, materials, and recycling industries with research and policy stakeholders to develop technological, economic, and regulatory solutions. The aim is to establish sustainable material cycles for the automotive industry.

Project Components

  • Expert workshops and topic-specific discussion formats involving industry, research, and policy
  • Development of practical scenarios for circular approaches in vehicle manufacturing
  • Networking along the entire value chain
  • Joint publications such as a white paper to document the project

Who Can Get Involved?
We are looking for companies, start-ups, research institutions, and other stakeholders from the following areas:

  • Vehicle manufacturing and automotive supply
  • Plastics and materials processing
  • Mechanical and chemical recycling
  • Environmental and circular economy sectors
