CCU in Bavaria – CO₂ as a resource for a climate-neutral industry
Kick-off for the cross-cluster project ‘CCU in Bavaria’
The cross-cluster project ‘CCU in Bavaria’, initiated by Chemie-Cluster Bayern and C.A.R.M.E.N. e.V. and funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy as part of the Bavarian Cluster Initiative, will officially begin in January 2025.
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the potential of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) as a key technology for a climate-neutral economy in Bavaria: CO₂ emissions are to be harnessed, new value-added cycles established and thus a contribution made to decarbonisation and climate protection.
The project runs from January 2025 to December 2025 and offers a platform for knowledge transfer and networking between companies, science and politics.
Background: Why Carbon Capture and Utilisation?
The economy faces the challenge of drastically reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in order to achieve climate targets. In addition to direct emission avoidance, CCU offers a promising solution: instead of emitting CO₂ unused into the atmosphere, it is considered a valuable raw material, e.g. for beverage production. Alternatively, CO₂ can be converted into indispensable products such as synthetic fuels, plastics, chemicals, fertilisers and building materials through chemical processes. To date, these have mainly been based on fossil raw materials.
As a leading business location, Bavaria has the necessary technological, scientific and economic resources to play a pioneering role in CCU technologies. This is where the cross-cluster project comes in by networking stakeholders, pooling knowledge and developing pragmatic solutions for implementation.
Project goals
The project pursues a holistic approach to the implementation of CCU technologies in Bavaria:
