Chemie-Cluster Bayern becomes a member of CO₂ Value Europe: Commitment to a sustainable carbon economy

Last updated on: 22 Apr, 2025

Chemie-Cluster Bayern (CCB) is strengthening its commitment in the field of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) and has joined CO₂ Value Europe (CVE) – the leading European interest group for the use of CO₂ as a raw material. With this membership, the CCB is further expanding its network at European level and underlining its objective of actively participating in the transformation towards a climate-neutral industry.

CO₂ Value Europe brings together players from industry, science and politics who are working together to drive forward the development and market launch of sustainable solutions for the material use of CO₂. With over 80 members, CVE is the leading voice for CCU issues in Europe and has a clear goal: to establish CO₂ no longer as a waste product, but as a valuable raw material in a circular economy.

CCU as a key to the transformation of the chemical industry

The use of CO₂ as a raw material offers enormous potential for the sustainable transformation of the chemical and materials industry. In a future climate-neutral industry, CO₂ – alongside biomass and recycling – will be one of the most important sources of carbon.

CCU makes it possible to capture unavoidable process-related emissions and convert them into new products such as plastics, chemicals or synthetic fuels. In this way, CCU not only helps to reduce emissions, but also closes carbon cycles and supports the defossilization of raw material-intensive industries.

For the energy-intensive chemical industry in particular, the establishment of such closed carbon cycles is crucial in order to be able to produce competitively and climate-neutrally in the long term.

CCU in Bavaria – regional initiative with an international perspective

As part of the cross-cluster project “CCU in Bavaria – CO₂ as a renewable raw material for material use”, Chemie-Cluster Bayern is working intensively with C.A.R.M.E.N. e.V. on the opportunities of CCU in Bavaria. The aim of the project is to inform Bavarian companies about the opportunities of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), to network them and to jointly develop new value chains based on CO₂.

Cooperation across borders

Although the project has a clear regional focus on Bavaria, international cooperation is essential. For this reason, Chemie-Cluster Bayern is also a member of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) alongside CVE. RCI advocates a complete shift away from fossil carbon in the chemical industry and promotes the use of renewable carbon sources from CO₂, biomass and recycling.

Networking in both initiatives enables a holistic view of a circular carbon economy from regional to international level. Through the exchange of knowledge and best practices, these can have a cross-border impact and establish a European carbon economy.

After all, the underlying challenge – the sustainable transformation of our economy – affects everyone and can only be solved collectively.

Looking ahead: CO₂-based fuels and chemicals 2025 conference in Cologne
A special highlight for cooperation and networking along the carbon value chain is the CO₂-Based Fuels and Chemicals Conference 2025 in Cologne from April 29 to 30. As one of the most important international platforms for carbon capture and utilization (CCU) and renewable carbon strategies, the conference offers the opportunity to comprehensively discuss current developments, innovations and political framework conditions.
